Polishing of Optical Glass Lenses

Mar. 10, 2020

Over the past half century, people have put forward various opinions on the exploration of the polishing mechanism of optical glass, and there is no unified understanding so far. When discussing the factors that affect optical polishing, only one aspect is often emphasized.

In the past, most studies on glass polishing have focused on the process conditions and process parameters such as the selection of polishing machine tools, polishing die materials, and physical properties of polishing powder. Optical glass meniscus cylindrical lenses of different grades show different chemical properties in polishing, the chemical properties of various types of polishing liquids, and the relationship between the two in polishing, which are often overlooked by most people.

According to long-term practice and understanding of the polishing mechanism, we tend to interpret it in a comprehensive way, that is, the polishing process is considered as a combination of physical and chemical interactions, and the two effects exist at the beginning and end of the polishing process. The polishing of optical glass is an extremely complicated process, and the influencing factors are also extremely complicated.

The above various factors, under certain circumstances, play a certain role in the polishing speed and surface quality of optical parts, but some factors play a more prominent role, such as the type of optical glass and the type of polishing liquid, all As for optical glass, each has different properties, but some brands of glass also have similar or identical properties. Practice has shown that the polishing of optical parts must distinguish between different types of optical glass and choose suitable polishing conditions.

Cold processing of optical glass lenses:

Track 1: Milling is to remove uneven bubbles and impurities on the surface of the optical glass, (about 0.05-0.08) plays a molding role.

The second step is the fine grinding process, which removes the damaged layer of the milled optical glass and fixes the R value.

The third step is the polishing process, which polishes the finely-ground optical glass lens at one time. This process is mainly to make the appearance better.

The fourth step is cleaning, which is to clean the polishing powder on the surface of the polished lens. Prevent acrylic. 

The fifth pass is edging, which grinds the outer diameter of the original lens to a specified outer diameter.

The sixth way is coating, which is to coat one or more colored films or other films on the surface of the optical glass lens that needs to be coated.

The seventh way is to apply ink. It is necessary to apply a layer of black ink to the outer lens to prevent reflection.

The eighth way is cementing, which is a combination of two lenses with the same R value and the same outer diameter material as the lens.

Special procedures: multi-chip processing (disc processing) and small spherical processing (20 shafts) wire cutting. According to different production processes, the procedures may be slightly different, such as the order of ink coating and gluing.
